Trackchair Program

The Trackchair Program will launch Friday, May 1st, 2026.  

Reservations open April 16th for outings scheduled May 1st – June 7th  

Additional dates for June and July will be released in late May, with more added on a rolling basis.

Trackchairs are battery powered all-terrain wheelchairs designed to provide individuals with limited mobility the freedom to explore off-road terrains that would typically be inaccessible. 

The Frick Environmental Center (FEC) currently has 4 Trackchairs: Two ST 24 and two Axis 30 Trackchairs. 

• ST24 is a larger, wider Trackchair built for lateral stability.  

•  (Seat Dimensions) - "24 x 16 inches (Width x Depth)

• Weight Limit: 300 lbs 

• Axis 30 is a narrower model, with built in vibration dampeners to improve the ride quality.  

• (Seat Dimensions) - "20 x 19 inches (Width x Depth)"

• Weight Limit: 350 lbs

• Eligibility: Free to borrow for youth (ages 5+) and adults with limited mobility. Trackchair users must fit safely in the Trackchairs.  

• Companion requirement: All Trackchair users must be accompanied by a friend, family member, or support person who can join for the entire outing and assist with transfers if needed. 

• Under 18: All Trackchair users under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the entire outing.  

• First Outing Support: A trained Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy volunteer will join the Trackchair user’s first outing to ensure a safe experience. 

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy staff and volunteers cannot help with transferring to or from the Trackchair. Please bring a companion/caregiver who can assist with the transfer.  

We have a wooden, 30 by 8-inch transfer board with cut handles and an adjustable transfer belt available for use. You are welcome to bring additional transfer equipment.

Trackchairs have toggle and goalpost control options. These controls are adaptable for right-hand, left-hand, or attendant control.   

The Trackchairs include optional accessories to support mobility and comfort. The reservation form will ask about any accessories you may need.

• Only one person at a time is allowed in the Trackchair. 

• Service animals and pets are welcome to join the outing but must be in the control of a companion or other visitors.   

• Trackchairs cannot accommodate ventilators.   

• Trackchairs cannot navigate slopes of 20 degrees or more.   

All Trackchair users must review and sign a Trackchair waiver to participate in the program. If a companion plans to use the attendant control feature, they must also review and sign. You can review, print, and sign the waiver before your reserved outing. A physical copy will also be available to review and sign on the day of your outing.

Parking 

• Two covered, ADA-accessible parking spaces are available under the solar panel array. PPC staff will do their best to reserve one ADA parking space for a Trackchair outing. If none are available, two nearby non-accessible spaces will be reserved. 

Restrooms 

Trackchairs cannot enter restrooms. Please plan to use the restroom before transferring. 

• Restrooms Closest to Parking Lot: There are two single-occupancy, ADA compliant restrooms located at the building near the parking lot, The Barn. 

• Restrooms Inside the Frick Environmental Center:

• • Two ADA-compliant gendered restrooms on the top floor 

• • One ADA-compliant family restroom on the top floor 

• • One single-occupancy, ADA-compliant restroom on the middle floor 

• • One single-occupancy, ADA-compliant restroom with an adult changing station located on the lower level. 

Water 

• Bring your reusable water bottle and stay hydrated during your visit by utilizing the water filling station, located inside the Frick Environmental Center, open from 10 AM to 4 PM.  

A trained Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy volunteer is required on the Trackchair user’s first outing to ensure a safe experience. After the first Trackchair outing, the Trackchair user and volunteer will complete a brief evaluation and meet with PPC staff to review the user’s experience, understanding, and knowledge as it relates to the Trackchair.  

A companion may be consulted if the user is under 18, needs decision-making support, or the companion plans to operate the attendant control. 

The Trackchair user and/or their companion may be asked to demonstrate safe Trackchair operation and knowledge of key safety procedures. This helps PPC staff determine if future outings can be done safely without a volunteer. 

Clearance is at the discretion of PPC staff, who will keep track of all cleared users. Even if a user is cleared to go out with a volunteer, a friend, family member, or support partner needs to join for the entire outting – safety and support are always a priority!
