#ThrowbackThursday: Star Party and Full Moon Hike
We're throwing it back to Saturday, September 14 when Park Rangers, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Science Center, and International Dark Sky Association came together for the Star Party and Full Moon Hike adventure in Frick Park.
The event included observations of the Moon, star clusters, Saturn and Jupiter. Telescopes provided by the Carnegie Science Center allowed Pittsburghers of all ages to observe the night sky.
Attendees also observed a total of three refractors and dobs of various sizes, a large pair of binos, and an 11" Schmidt-Cass at the party. Audible expressions of surprise and amazement echoed around the park.
Additionally, the Parks Conservancy led three full Moon hikes along wooded trails, where guests ventured to an overlook that showcased the Eastern sky. With 75 spots available, all three hikes were reserved within the first 15 minutes of the event, far exceeding our expectations.
The Carnegie Science Center's planetarium presenters also thrilled adults and children alike with stories about celestial objects and current astro-news.
With more than 150 attendees, this event would not have been possible without the dedication and support of volunteers from each contributing organization.
