CLEANING STAR LIGHTS (MAY) MELLON PARK WALLED GARDEN
VOLUNTEER EVENT DETAILS
WHERE
Mellon Park Walled Garden, 1059 Shady Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232
There are 150 granite discs embedded in the lawn at the Walled Garden that form an artwork of constellations. The granite discs have carved white letters denoting the name of the star it represents. During the course of the season these become dirty and need to be cleaned.
You will use toothbrushes, paint brushes, bucket of water, baking soda to clean the white lettering on the two inch granite disks. This includes bending, stooping, and kneeling in the grass to clean the stars. Vinyl or latex gloves plus cleaning tools will be provided for you.
SAFETY
Garden spaces are often fully exposed to the sun and elements. Please bring your own water bottle. We recommend volunteers check the hourly forecast before arriving so that they can come prepared for the weather (eg. extra water, sunscreen or sunhats, bug spray, and rain jackets or sweatshirts). While not necessary, we recommend folks wear close-toed shoes for these volunteer events.

LITTER REMOVAL ALLEGHENY COMMONS PARK
VOLUNTEER EVENT DETAILS
WHERE
Allegheny Commons Park, Pittsburgh PA 15212
Allegheny Commons is a busy and expansive park on the North Side. Many areas of the park are adjacent to high traffic streets and are under the flight path of a helicopter for Allegheny General Hospital. These factors contribute a lot of trash blowing into the park and it can always use help being cleaned up.
Volunteers will pick up trash beginning at the Northeast Fountain and heading through the park westward. The Parks Conservancy staff will provide disposable gloves and trash bags. Full bags will be left for pickup beside trashcans in the park.
SAFETY
Park spaces are often fully exposed to the sun and elements. We recommend volunteers check the hourly forecast before arriving so that they can come prepared for the weather (eg. extra water, sunscreen or sunhats, bug spray, and rain jackets or sweatshirts). Poison Ivy, ticks, and other wildlife may be present. Volunteers are required to wear close-toed shoes, and long pants are highly recommended. Please bring your own water bottle.
