On View at the FEC Maxo Vanka Gift to America 2.0 - December 4-Mid-March

About the Exhibit

From over 30 applicants, local BIPOC and immigrant artists were selected to create works inspired by Maxo Vanka’s murals in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church. These commissions, launched in 2021, bring contemporary perspectives to themes like justice, injustice, the immigrant experience, and motherhood.

About the Murals

Maxo Vanka's murals are a series of 25 powerful, socially conscious paintings in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale, Pennsylvania, created in 1937 and 1941, depicting Croatian immigrant life, social injustice, war, love, and faith with striking imagery, like Christ on the battlefield, making them a hidden gem of Pittsburgh and a unique blend of folk art and fine art, currently undergoing preservation.

About the Collective

Maxo Vanka’s murals within the immigrant church in Millvale inspire reverence for the past and visions for the future.

GTA 2.0 commissions local and regional BIPOC and Immigrant artists to create new works that engage with Vanka’s enduring murals, fostering contemporary dialogues that reflect the rich tapestry of our region.
