About the Project
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has completed the second phase of the North Promenade restoration in Allegheny Commons Park, further enhancing Pittsburgh’s oldest public park. Beginning on June 19, 2023, this phase focused on the stretch from the intersection of Federal Street and North Avenue to Arch Street, improving accessibility, safety, and the overall visitor experience.
A major highlight of the project was the enhancement of the George Washington Monument, which was given a new setting within a well-scaled oval plaza, ensuring it remains a prominent and inviting focal point. Additional improvements included resurfacing the historic pathway, planting canopy trees to provide shade and greenery, installing new benches for gathering and relaxation, and upgrading lighting to illuminate the Promenade. These enhancements were designed to create a more welcoming and enjoyable space while directly addressing the priorities voiced by Northside residents.
The project’s progress was marked by two key milestones: a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony on May 24, 2023, and the official “relighting” event on April 30, 2024, where Mayor Gainey, city officials, and Northside residents gathered to commemorate the revitalization of this cherished community space.
This transformation was made possible in part by an $800,000 allocation from the Parks Tax Trust Fund.
