Join the Friends of Riverview Park for a fun-filled day celebrating the MoonTree and Pennsylvania Hawthorn!
Riverview Park and Allegheny Observatory are proud caretakers of a NASA MoonTree—a sweetgum grown from a seed that traveled around the Moon aboard the Artemis I spacecraft.
Bring the whole family for a day of science, art, and hands-on discovery inspired by this one-of-a-kind tree. Activities are designed for children in grades K–5 and their families.
New this year! Pennsylvania Hawthorn (Crataegus pennsylvanica) is a globally vulnerable species that occurs in Pittsburgh’s Riverview Park. Hawthorns, however, are notoriously difficult to identify down to the species. Join Friends of Riverview Park and international hawthorn experts from the University of Montreal for a hawthorn workshop and nature hike into our park’s Natural Heritage Area. Want to get involved with the conservation of this vulnerable species? The first step is to learn to properly identify it. Workshop begins at 11AM. Please register at the link below.
Event Schedule:
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Hawthorn Workshop
12:00 – 2:00 PM: Live music from Paz and Ukulele Eddie
12:30 PM: Hawthorn Hike
1:00 – 5:00 PM: Mini tours of the Observatory
Enjoy games, STEAM activities for kids, and a food truck throughout the day!
Weather Plan:
If the weather is nice, activities will take place on the lawn with observatory tours available. In case of cold or rain, all activities will be held indoors.
