ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, is leading the design and implementation of improvements to existing park entrances and signage at Mellon Park! This community-driven project, a key component of the Mellon Park Action Plan, is designed to facilitate clearer and more consistent access to the park.
The two sides of Mellon Park have very distinct characteristics and uses, including disparate edge conditions and entrances. During the Action Plan engagement process, many park users noted that they were unaware that the two sides of Mellon Park were the same park. Community members also noted a lack of park identification and way-finding signage, which also contributed to the perception that the sides of the park were separate spaces.
This project aims to achieve the following goals:
- Establish design characteristics and materials palette that are appropriate for use on both sides of the park, respecting history and contemporary uses.
- Design and implement improvements to existing park entrances that will provide continuity and consistency for Mellon Park.
- Develop and install a comprehensive signage package on both sides of the park that establishes identification of park amenities, way-finding, and rules and regulations for an improved user experience.
This project is generously funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, whose ongoing commitment to Pittsburgh's green spaces has made this and many other improvements possible.
