Managing Invasive Species in Frick Park
We're partnering with Allegheny GoatScape to remove invasive species like bush honeysuckle from Frick Park at Clayton Hill to restore the woodland habitat for birds and other wildlife. Goats will be "working" areas around Clayton Hill this summer and fall (2020) and again in 2021. After the honeysuckle has been removed, native shrubs and trees will be planted by staff and volunteers. We'll have numerous education programs for local schools and at public events. And we'll be tracking our success by monitoring changes to the plant and bird communities.
BIRDERS WANTED
We’re tracking birds’ response to our restoration efforts and we need your help. Count birds in the restoration areas and submit your observations to eBird using the app or later online. Be sure to count birds in each restoration area separately and notice that restoration areas are often on one side of the trail.

- Chose date and time
- Count birds – only record birds in the appropriate area, often one side of the trail
- If you want to count birds in two sections at once you need to start another checklist
- Click on “Review” for the current track
- “Stop Track”
- Click on the home (house icon) button in the top right
- Start a new checklist and follow steps above beginning with 3
- You can toggle between lists by clicking on “Checklist” and selecting the list
- Submit data
- Click “Review”
- Fill out necessary data
- Click “Submit”
- Be sure to submit all checklists
- Record Checklist data
- Monitoring area (i.e. hotspot name)
- Date
- Start time
- Duration
- Distance
- Party size
- Count birds
- Keep checklists separate for each monitoring area
- Submit data
- Log into eBird
- Click “Submit” next to eBird in the top left
- Enter Pennsylvania in “find it on a Map)
- Zoom to “Frick Park”
- Pan right to find the appropriate monitoring hotspot (Do NOT use “Frick Park—Beechwood Entrance”)
- Frick Park--Clayton North (Monitoring)
- Frick Park--South Clayton West (Monitoring)
- Frick Park--Clayton East (Monitoring)
- Frick Park--Nature Trail East (Monitoring)
- Click “Continue”
- Enter observation date and type
- Enter the number of birds seen or heard
- Click “Submit” when done
