Let’s Talk About Parks: Winter Berries

The “Let’s Talk About Parks” series is designed to encourage exploration and discovery of Pittsburgh’s urban parks.

Winter weather in our parks means most trees lose their leaves as snow blankets their limbs and the ground. The woods may look plain at first, but seasonal sparseness also creates great backgrounds for colorful berries. The official term is “fruit,” which encompasses many different fruits including berries (fleshy fruit from a single flower) and drupes (hard seed surrounded by fleshy part and outer skin).
