Group Volunteer Opportunities Green Infrastructure Maintenance

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE (SUMMER) Republic Street

VOLUNTEER EVENT DETAILS

WHERE

Emerald View Park, Republic Rain Garden

Green infrastructure is an important part of the solution to our stormwater issues here in Pittsburgh. Rain gardens like the one at this site capture storm water from large rain events and give it the opportunity to slowly seep into soil, which both improves soil quality and reduces problematic stormwater runoff.  Like any infrastructure, green infrastructure such as rain gardens requires regular maintenance to function appropriately.

The rocky channels created to direct water into this rain garden need to be cleared of dirt and plant debris annually. This involves pulling weeds growing in the drainage channel, removing the rocks that line the channel in order to excavate the accumulated dirt, and then returning the rocks back to the channel. This task can be very challenging if it is hot and sunny.

SAFETY

Located on a long a steep paved hill, this site has full sun exposure and the work involves repeated bending over and standing up. Make sure to bring adequate sun protection and enough water to keep you hydrated. Close toed shoes are required for this project. There is no water access nor bathrooms on site.

DONATE

A suggested donation of $480 will help cover the costs of materials and staff hours for this event.
