From Slavery to Freedom Garden Restoration

About the Project

The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy launched the next phase of accessibility improvements at the Frick Environmental Center with upgrades to the From Slavery to Freedom Garden. Beginning in late 2025, the Parks Conservancy project team will rebuild aging garden beds and introduce wheelchair-accessible planting areas, improve entrances and trellises, and add a new shade structure to enhance visitor comfort. Expanded plantings—including sensory and perimeter gardens—will be paired with updated interpretive elements, such as QR code–enabled signage and refreshed garden maps, to deepen learning and engagement. Supported by the Garden Club of Allegheny County and the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD), these improvements reinforce the Parks Conservancy’s commitment to creating welcoming, accessible spaces while honoring the garden’s role in sharing stories of resilience, knowledge, and the journey from slavery to freedom through nature.
