What types of insects live in the stream and why are they important for birds? Join Allegheny Land Trust on a stream study adventure to observe macroinvertebrates, or insects that are in their larval or nymph stages, crayfish, worms, snails, and other aquatic bugs! Learn how to safely sample macroinvertebrates, explore their diverse adaptations, and investigate their roles in the local ecosystem. We’ll use identification keys and magnifying glasses to help identify these cool aquatic critters.
Nets, collection bin/cups, identification keys, and magnifying glasses are provided. Please come dressed for the weather. As we will be exploring a stream, extra clothing is recommended (just in case). Make sure to wear comfortable, closed footwear that is okay to get wet. Crocs and open-toed sandals are not recommended for traversing wet and uneven terrain and may limit full participation. This program is family friendly. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Accessibility information:

1 mile of walking
terrain can be steep
crushed limestone is the primary trail surface
