The Daffodil Project

Daffodils in Schenley Park

The Daffodil Project began in 2007 with the planting of more than 5,000 daffodil bulbs along the sidewalk near the Bartlett Playground. The Bartlett area is the pilot location for a collaboration between the Parks Conservancy, the City of Pittsburgh, and the Penn State University Cooperative Extension to install daffodil beds throughout the city. Because the plants are repellent to deer and can return for decades without replanting, they represent a sustainable gardening technique as well as a colorful welcome to spring. In 2008, 7,500 more bulbs were added to the Bartlett area, completing the conversion of a hard-to-maintain lawn into a largely self-sustaining flowerbed. The Daffodil Project will next move to the other three regional parks, with a goal of planting hundreds of thousands of new bulbs over the next several years.
